Synopsis: Dorie’s older sister Lil helped raise her after their parents’ deaths. Lil and her new husband Dave move into the family house with Dorie. Dorie treats Dave like an older brother, but Lil gets jealous of her sister. Dave says Lil is “anxious, even possessive,” and he and Dorie have to dispel her fears. Dorie pretends to have romantic problems of her own, and this causes Lil to become the protective older sister once more.

Joan eventually dates John and is appointed acting store manager. She institutes a new policy of selling cheap goods to maximise profits but ruins the store’s reputation instead. Joan accepts blame and resigns but retains John’s love.

She later explains to Earl that she is engaged to David, who was blinded in the war and has been “in a veteran’s hospital so long!” David arrives for a visit and tells Grace he’s in love with a nurse from the hospital, so he frees Grace to marry Earl.
