Wendy fends off Burton’s lecherous advances by clubbing him over the head. Thinking she's killed him, Wendy tries to flee on a tramp steamer but police detective Rick stops her: he says Burton is not dead and she won’t face any charges. Wendy thinks Rick has romantic possibilities.

Ned and Kathy fall in love. Blakesly catches them and the dean says either Kathy or Ned must leave. Ned departs, but when he later discovers the cure for a crop blight, he says Kathy’s influence was vital to his success. Ned returns to the college and punches Blakesly, then reunites with Kathy.

Carol and Jeff admit their love, while Clyde will be consoled by Sybil, the mine owner’s daughter.
