I am glad to see this book show up, even in its worn and incomplete state, as it is a pretty tough book to find. It's kind of sad to remember that this issue didn't just mark the end of the title's run--it was one of the five Fawcett publications to make it so far as to appear with a January 1954 cover date. Those were the publisher's dying breath, with The Marvel Family, Lash Larue Western, Funny Animals, Rocky Lane Western and Tex Ritter Western outlasting roughly 145 other Fawcett comic titles.
The three other publications that still appeared in the quality guarantee list at the top of this issue's first story page had already been discontinued two months earlier, including the Big Red Cheese's long-running solo magazine. (Fawcett's flagship book, Whiz Comics, had already been gone for a half a year by this point.) Fourteen years of exceptional comic book storytelling and then the Fawcett quality was gone for good, even though six of these eight listed titles limped along for awhile longer with other publishers.
Thanks for salvaging what you could of this one! |
