Comment: The art for this story was probably drawn by Curt Swan, who is today more famous for taking over the drawing chores for the SUPERMAN comic book series in the early 1960s. Dick Powell was an actor who appeared in musicals and later detective movies; his best known role was as the detective Philip Marlowe in the movie MURDER, MY SWEET.

Comment: magazine dated jan 1949. the art (pencils and inks) are done by Paul Parker. === no movie listing for FIVE FINGERS OF SATAN with Dick Powell. makes wonder where this story adaptation came from. the story hits me like a ton of bricks.

Comment: There is no Dick Powell movie with a plot similar to this story, and I note that the character's name is "Dick Powell." I'd assume this may have been part of Powell's continuing effort to present himself as the hard-boiled adventurer; from the late 30s, he had wanted to distance himself from his earlier male ingenue roles. Be interesting to know who approached whom in negotiating the logistics of this issue!
