The excellent cover monster reminds me very much the subterraneans from THUNDER agents: craggy skull like face with bulging eyes. That John Giunta may have drawn the cover is even more interesting as he did many stories for THUNDER agents, primarily Noman. The inking and blacks even have a Wood like feeling, but at 1944 this is far too early for Wood. |

Giunta's work varied widely, and though he was seen on several fantasy adventure series, his work is largely no more than competent. He also did quite a few pulp illustrations. I met a woman in Portland who had several of his originals, and was looking for a valuation. Unfortunately, I was more interested in her own work, as she had been a fashion ilustrator in the 30s and 40s, and her own pen and brush work was terrific. |
