Comment: Thank you for posting this (although I do not have a program to read the download on my computer). This reprint was my first exposure to Rulah, when I was 12, and kickstarted my adolescence into adulthood. Other Rulah reprints at the time did not meet the standard, especially the b&W horror mag versions that added exposed blood & bone. Wrong kind of exposure. "Pearls Of Patmos" (whose title was unknown to me, at the time, since the first page was absent) is highly provocative, with suggestive poses and composition that implies much more bare skin than we see. We know Rulah is clothed (more or less), but her silhouette shows off every curve and detail of her figure. Still get a kick out of the lower left panel on Page 8, when the blonde villainess switches clothes with Rulah (who lies naked under the bimbo's blouse) and brags that the suit is a little tight. All the art in this issue is more playful, winking at the reader. Even the gruesomeness of "Condemned" has an exotic sense of composition. Granted, this is a guilty pleasure that comes nowhere near the artistry of Gray Morrow, Al Williamson or Frank Frazetta. But the combination of fun art and wild imagination mixed with the transitional emotions of a teenager kept this memory vivid for 48 years. Good scans, too. Although the reprint may be missing a vital page, it is in better condition than most copies of the source material. Thanks again. Now, I can explore the rest of Rulah's world with full relish! |
